Where the energy goes
Charging an EV involves converting AC mains electricity to DC (for AC home charging, this happens in the car's onboard charger), then moving that energy into the battery through the battery management system. Every stage of that conversion generates some heat — and heat is energy that didn't make it into storage. On DC rapid charging, much of the AC-to-DC conversion happens at the charger itself rather than the car, but losses still occur.
