These are national averages — your own tariff, network operator and location will shift the number, sometimes considerably. Motorway service station rapid chargers tend to sit at the top of the range; supermarket and car park chargers are often cheaper.

The step most calculators skip: charging losses

Not every kWh you pay for reaches your battery. Some energy is lost as heat in the cable, the onboard charger and the battery management system — typically 8–15% on a home AC charge, and somewhat less on rapid DC charging. A calculator that ignores this understates your real cost, because you're billed for what leaves the wall, not what lands in the battery.

Worked example: a 60kWh EV, 20–80% top-up

Step by step

  1. Energy into battery: 60kWh × 60% (20–80% window) = 36kWh
  2. Energy from the wall at 10% loss: 36 ÷ 0.9 = 40kWh
  3. Cost at home standard rate (24.67p): 40 × 0.2467 = £9.87
  4. Cost at home off-peak rate (8.8p): 40 × 0.088 = £3.52
  5. Cost at public rapid rate (79p): 40 × 0.79 = £31.60
