EV Road Trip Charging Calculator

How many rapid charging stops a journey needs, roughly how long they'll take, and what the charging will cost in total.

Your Trip

Usually a bit lower than everyday efficiency due to motorway speeds.

Most drivers stop rapid charging around 80% since speed tapers off above it.

How this is calculated

The first leg uses the range between your starting charge and the minimum arrival buffer; every stop after that tops up between the buffer and your chosen stop-charging ceiling (typically 80%, since DC rapid charging slows down beyond that). The number of stops is the remaining distance divided by the range each top-up provides: Stops = ceil(remaining miles ÷ range per stop). Charging time per stop uses the same simple kWh ÷ kW estimate as the charging time calculator, and total cost multiplies the energy added across all stops by your rapid charging rate.

Real trips vary — charger availability, queueing, weather and terrain all affect the real numbers. Treat this as a planning estimate to compare routes or cars, not an exact itinerary.

Estimates for guidance only. Always check charger locations and availability on a route-planning app before setting off.
