Worked example: 8,000 miles a year
Take a typical UK EV driver covering 8,000 miles a year at 3.5 miles/kWh efficiency, with a 10% charging loss factored in:

- Energy needed at the battery: 8,000 ÷ 3.5 = 2,286kWh/year
- Energy from the wall at 10% loss: 2,286 ÷ 0.9 = 2,540kWh/year
- Cost on home off-peak (8.8p): ≈£224/year
- Cost on home standard (24.67p): ≈£627/year
- Cost relying entirely on public rapid (79p): ≈£2,006/year

When public charging is still worth it
- No home charging access: flats and on-street parking without a dedicated charger make public charging the only option for most top-ups.
- Long journeys: a 20-30 minute rapid top-up mid-trip is worth the per-kWh premium for the time saved. See the road trip charging calculator.
- Occasional top-ups: topping up 10-20% while shopping rarely justifies switching your whole charging routine.
